Case file at a glance

The only public clue is a blurry gas-station surveillance photo of a black Chevrolet Impala. Police suspect the driver may know something. The family says there is no evidence linking the case to the other Nelson County cases, such as Jason Ellis and Crystal Rogers.

Online discussion (unverified)

Where people talk about this case online, and how to read it.

Not evidence. Public posts are unverified, are often wrong, and sometimes accuse real people. We link the searches so you can see what people are saying, but we do not copy posts, usernames, or accusations onto this page, and we do not treat anything posted online as a source for a claim. If you find something that looks like a genuine lead, send it through the clue form near the top of this page, with a source.

Coverage timeline and verification

What local and national reports say, and when we last checked for a solution.

Last verified Oct 8, 2026. No arrest found. Newest report we found is Aug 2018. We search for arrest, charge, conviction, identification, and genealogy language. This page lists the reports we found and read, oldest first. It is not complete. Print newspaper archives from the years of the crime (for example the Cincinnati Enquirer and Kentucky Post) are not searchable by our tools, so early coverage is mostly missing. A person should check those archives before a case is treated as final.

Latest lead: the black Impala

The only physical lead public since 2014 is a car on a blurry camera.

Not an accusation. The Impala's driver is not identified and nothing shows involvement.

What is known

What would settle it

  1. Identify the Impala through registrations and enhanced video.
  2. Re-test evidence from the home for DNA.
  3. Interview people in the family's circle again.
Cold Case Checker's assessment

A personal attack by someone who knew the family

We put the chance that the killer knew one of them at roughly 65%, matching the police remark about a personal motive. We put the chance of a solution within five years at roughly 8%.

Solved cases

Local cases that moved after decades.

Carol Sue Klaber (Boone County, KY, 1976)

Investigators say a private genealogy investigation helped them identify Thomas Dunaway, who died in 1990, as the man who killed the 16-year-old. He cannot be indicted, so prosecutors sent a letter saying he would have been charged. The lesson: genealogy can name a killer after decades, even when no trial is possible.

Forensic genetic genealogy training

In 2024, local investigators were being trained in the technique, which has already helped solve Cincinnati-area cases, according to FOX19. The lesson: the tool is now local, so cases with usable DNA have a real path forward.

Golden State Killer

Old crime-scene DNA matched relatives in a public database and led to a 2018 arrest. The lesson: a usable sample can still work after decades.

Case details come from public news coverage and the Boone County Sheriff's cold-case list. Confirm in court records.
